FAQ
Q: Where is the meeting point?
We are positioned next to the cafeteria located in the world-famous Glacier Lagoon – Jökulsárlon.
Between the months of Dec-April we have a trailer / ticket office on the right-hand side of the cafeteria. In the summer, we meet next to our super jeeps on the left side of the cafeteria, look for our big white super jeeps marked our logo. If you have any trouble finding us, please call +354 8663490
Q: Where do the tours take place?
We meet at the world famous Jökulsárlón – Glacier Lagoon (5 hours away from Reykjavík). First we will check you in and gear you up (if necessary). Then we will drive 30-40 minutes from Jökulsárlón – Glacier Lagoon to Þröng, the road and parking by Breiðamerkurjökull east.
Q: When is the meeting time for my tour?
Your meeting time is the time you see on your ticket. For glacier walks, we’ll meet at the time shown on your ticket, gear you up, and depart approximately 30 minutes later or once everyone is ready. For ice cave tours, the meeting time is also as indicated on your ticket, and we typically depart about 10 minutes later once everyone has arrived.
Q: Are there any age restrictions on our tours?
The age limit for our Ice Cave tour is 7 years old. The age limit for our summer Ice Exploration tour is 10 years old. The age limit for our winter Ice Cave and Exploration tour is 13 years old. All adults are welcome on our tour as long as they are in good health and can walk the distance needed for each tour.
Q: I am pregnant, can I still join the tour?
Our tours begin in a ride with the super jeep to the glacier, the ride can be quite bumpy sometimes and therefore we do not recommend the tour for pregnant women.
Q: What should I wear on the winter combo tour (Ice Cave and Glacier Exploration) ?
Bring a warm, breathable base layer, preferably wool, as it’s the most essential layer for Icelandic winters. Wear comfortable, outdoor-appropriate clothing that is warm and breathable, along with a wind- and rainproof jacket. Don’t forget headwear and gloves. Bring a backpack to store any layers you may need to add or remove during the tour, as well as snacks and a water bottle. Wear warm socks and sturdy hiking boots that cover your ankles.
If you don’t have hiking boots, Mont Blanc GTX mountaineering boots are available for rent in sizes 37–48.
Avoid synthetic materials, as they do not provide warmth or breathability, which are crucial when moving.
Jeans and sneakers are not allowed on the tour .
Q: What is the difference between the Ice Cave tour and Ice Cave and Glacier Exploration tour?
The Ice Cave Tour includes a visit to one ice cave in Breiðamerkurjökull, typically one with minimum walking distance (1–4 km, depending on the cave). The Ice Cave and Glacier Exploration Tour offers a more extensive experience, typically visiting two or more ice caves, walking further on the glacier (4–6 km, depending on group ability and conditions), and exploring a variety of formations such as moulins and crevasses. Both tours feature a super jeep ride to the glacier and an ice cave visit. The key difference is that the Glacier
Exploration Tour includes more time on the glacier, multiple cave visits, and a longer hike.
Q: Do you rent hiking boots?
Yes, we do. We have Scarpa Month Blanc GTX mountaineering shoes that will keep your feet dry and your ankles safe. We currently have EU sizes 37-48, in order to reserve a pair you can either email us at ice@explorers.is or add them to your cart when booking a tour on our website.
Q: Do you rent clothing?
Yes, we rent rain jackets in sizes small to extra large. In order to reserve one you can either email us at ice@explorers.is or add the jacket to your cart when booking a tour on our website.
Q: What equipment is provided on the tour?
For the glacier walk you will always be provided with crampons, a safety harness and a helmet. In the winter you might also be provided with microspikes and headlamps if conditions require them. For the ice cave tours you will be provided with a helmet, a headlamp and microspikes if needed.
Q: Can I bring my camera along on the tour?
It is highly advisable to take a camera, or at least a phone to capture the amazing moments because it will not be long before the glacial formations change or even disappear as they normally do.
Q: How do I contact the Ice Explorers team?
Please contact us via email: ice@explorers.is or via phone: +354 866 3490.
Q: What is the cancelation policy
You can cancel or modify your booking up to 48 hours before the start time for a full refund. Cancellations made less than 48 hours before the start time are non-refundable.
Q: Can I travel to you from Reykjavik the same day of the tour?
While it’s possible, we do not recommend it. The drive from Reykjavík takes about 5 hours, and the southeast
coast is filled with stunning sights and stops that you would likely prefer to enjoy rather than rush past.
Additionally, road conditions can be challenging, significantly increasing the risk of missing your tour due to delays. Please note that no refund will be issued in such cases unless the ring road is officially closed by authorities.
Q: Can the guide advise if I am eligible for rescheduling the tour and/or a refund?
No, for all your questions and concerns you would need to talk to someone in the office.
Best to send an email to ice@explorers.is with your inquiry or call +354 866 3490
